Wangdue Phodrang – The Central Paradise

Located to the south of the Punakha Valley, Wangdue Phodrang is known as Wangdue commonly. It is a very busy town and is the last one before entering central Bhutan if you are travelling from south to north. Wangdue is famous for its dzong as well as the beautiful view of the valley.

Perched at an altitude of about 4400 feet, Wangdue is the second largest district fo the kingdom with an approximate population of 27,000.Wangdue is famous for its Shaman culture tales, I the original home of Pema Tshewang Tashi and the flowery speeches of Lozeys of Shaa.

You can buy some slate carvings and the best fine bamboo workpieces as souvenirs from Wangdue. It is also famous for the Black-necked cranes that are considered an exotic species.

The climate in Wangdue is warmer compared to the rest of the kingdom and the summers are hot and winters cool.

Punakha Dzong

Built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637, it is located at the confluence of both the rivers and served as an administrative and religious centre of the region. This dzong has been damaged 5 times by earthquakes and fires, however, it has been restored to its glory by the king.

Gangtey Goempa

The Gangtey Goempa is a Buddhist monastery that dates back to the 17th century. The monastery itself is huge and has some exquisite architecture worth photographing. IT houses monk’s quarters, a small guest house, meditation centres and the main monastery.

Phobjhika Valley

Beautiful and serene, the Phobjhika valley and is winter home to the Black-necked cranes. The cranes come here in winter to roost on the valley meadows and it is a beautiful sight. The Phobjhika Valley also has a biking trail where you can bike through on some easy routes to explore.

The valley is also a wildlife reserve and also is home to sambars, serows, wild boars, red foxes, leopards, black bears, barking deer in addition to the Black-necked cranes. The cranes are said to migrate from the colder northern regions to the warmer climate here. The government has established The Royal Society for Protection of Nature to ensure that the wildlife comes to no harm.

Phodrang Dzong

Built in 1639, The Phodrang Dzong is built on a ridge that overlooks the Dangchu and Punatsangchu Rivers and is said to have been very powerful before the monarchy was established when the governor of the dzong wielded the decision-making process.Founded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it is today the administration office for monk bodies.
