Punakha Dzong

Built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637, it is located at the confluence of both the rivers and served as an administrative and religious centre of the region. This dzong has been damaged 5 times by earthquakes and fires, however, it has been restored to its glory by the king.

Chimi Lhakhang

Located in the centre of the Punakha Valley, this Lhakhang is dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley who was a teacher with a difference from the 15th century. This temple is also regarded as the temple of fertility and many childless couples come here to pray in the hope that they can conceive.

Talo

Scattered across the hills, the village of Talo is nestled at 2,800m) and is supposed to be the cleanest village in the district. It has some wonderful farmhouses with flower gardens and its women are known for their beauty.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

The Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten is said to have been built to ward off negative energies and bring harmony, peace and stability to the world. You can see the beautiful Mt. Gasa and its peaks from here and is situated in the northern part of the valley.

Village of Punakha Ritsha

Ritsha means the foot of a hill and most villages are suffixed with the word since most villages are at the foothills. This village is known for its rice growing and the main feature is that almost all houses are built on stone and mud foundations. Each house is similar to the next and it two storied surrounded by flower gardens and rice fields. This village also grows organic vegetables and fruits in abundance.

Nalanda Buddhist College

The Nalanda Buddhist College is worth a visit for the views it provided in the front. The monks studying here are ever ready to oblige and have a conversation with you.

Limbukha

This village is home to the famed Bhutan red rice and is set in beautiful surroundings complete with farmhouses overlooking the Dompala hills. You can also see both the rivers flowing and the view of the Dzong through the silent and breezy forests are quite mesmerising.This village is home to the annual “Serda” festival which depicts peace and tranquillity.
