The Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Ngapo are twin temples located at the base of the Meri Phuensum mountains.
Lhakhang Karpo also known as the White Temple, the Lhakang Karbo is one of the most popular Buddhist seats that portray Dharma and Kindness. Built in the 7th century by Emperor Songstan Gampo, it is the main seat of the monastic order of Haa Valley.
And Lhakhang Ngapo is known as the Black Temple, the Lhakhang Nagpo is said to represent the tantric practices that were rampant. The entire temple is painted black with streaks of white and red.
Beautiful and serene, this dzong does not seem to have a historical importance; however, the insides are adorned with some marvellous paintings and mystic Thangkas that are worth taking a look at.
This Goempa is located 7 km south of the Haa Valley and through the village of Yangthong. You can see the Chhundu Pang ceremonial ground where Yak sacrifices were undertaken in the recent past. Ahead is the Makha Zampa after crossing which you can see the Yangthong monastery. It houses some beautiful murals of Rinpoche in paradise.
3 Kms from the Yangthong Goemba stands the pre-Buddhist Chhundu Lhakhang which is said to have strong tantric connections, dedicated to Apu Chunndu, the guardian of Haa Valley. Inside, you can see the blue-skinned mural of App Chhundu and Jowya glare coming out of the glass cabinets.
This bridge connects the Haa valley to the Samarpudung valley. Don’t ignore the bridge, it is a symbol of old Bhutanese engineering principles and it is believed that it has some supernatural powers. It passes over the Wishing cow lake and it is believed that wishing for something standing on this bridge will help fulfill it.
If you are a photography enthusiast and love nature, you will have to photograph the Bhutanese National Flower – The Himalayan Blue Poppy (Meconopsis Grandis). Some of this flower’s species grow quite naturally in the Haa Valley.
The Juneydrak Hermitage is about an hour north of Haa. The approach to this heritage passes through a bridge that you can reach after a mani and a khonying. On the other side, you will exit into a fantastic rhododendron forest. There are directions everywhere and the entry is slightly difficult due to ladders and ropes that need to e navigated. This Hermitage is home to the footprint of Machig Labdrom, the Kingdom’s oldest fiercest Tantric practitioner.
Below the Juneydrak Hermitage is the Katsho Goempa which has some interesting walkways. It houses a few beautiful Thangkas.
In conclusion, Haa/ Haa Valley is one the most interesting, mysterious and fascinating part of Bhutan that should not be missed out on the travel agenda.
