If you are an avid reader and have an insatiable interest in history and religion, the National Museum is a must visit. In addition to modern reference books and academia, it also houses a lot of ancient and rare documents and books that are a treat to read.
This museum is one of its kinds and has been created or built to connect a traveller with the ancient Bhutanese heritage and culture. The main attraction here is the traditional Bhutanese house made with timber and mud. It is a three storied structure complete with household items as they are used in rural Bhutan in the mid 19th century. It depicts the Wang household during that era and it is actually an old house that has been restored to its originality
Located 8 km down into the valley from Thimphu, this Dzong was built in 1627 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The main attraction of this Dzong is the set of 300+ finely carved slates in the courtyard. These carvings are ancient and rare and can be found behind the prayer wheel. Presently, this Dzong houses the Institute for Language and Cultural Studies.
Built in the memory of the 3rd King of Bhutan, His Late Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk in 1974, this memorial is home to many statues and paintings that signify Buddhist philosophy.
This is the seat of the government of Bhutan and houses the secretariat and the throne of His Majesty, the King of Bhutan. IT was built originally in 1641 and rebuilt in 1965 by the Father of Modern Bhutan, His Late Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. The National Assembly is not a part of this building and is housed on the other side of the river.
Located south of Motithang and hanging on a ridge above Thimphu, this temple is actually a school for monks. It is said that a monk from Tibet, Lama Phajo Drugom Shigpo chose this place to build this temple in the 12th century. The beautiful Thimphu valley can be viewed in all its glory from here and this temple houses an 11 headed Chenrezig statue.
Also known as Kuensel Phodrang, it houses the largest statue of Buddha in Bhutan. In addition to offering prayers to Buddha, you can get a wonderful view of the entire Thimphu valley from this point.
A treasure trove of murals and artful masterpieces, Zantho Pelri Lhakhang is said to be built on an ancient battleground in 1960 to ward off negative energies, If you are an sculpture or an art enthusiast, this is a must visit.
Also known as Drubthob Goema, this nunnery overlooks the Trashichhoedzong and the beautiful golf course. This nunnery is populated with Buddhist nuns who are willing to have a conversation if you want to learn or understand. In the past, this nunnery belonged to the Leonardo Da Vinci of the Himalayas – Drubthob Thang Thong Gyalpo.
