Tamshing Lhakhang

Tamshing Lhakhang

The Tamshing Lhakhang is located right opposite the Kurje Lhakhang just across the river.Founded by Terton Pema Lingpa in the 1500’s, this Lhakhang is home to many ancient paintings like the 21 Taras and the 1,000 Buddhas. Restored at the end of 19th century, this Lhakhang has a religious prominence in Bhutanese history.

Konchogsum Lhakhang

This is considered to be one of the oldest Lhakhang in Bhutan and was built in the 6th century. Today it sports a new look since it was renovated as recently as 1995. This Lhakhang was home to a very large bell which was said to be heard in Lhasa when it rang. Sadly, the bell was damaged during an attempt to steal it in the 17th century. It was broken and today, it is an exhibit at the National Museum, Paro.

Kurje Lhakhang

This Lhakhang is a collection three temples of which the second temple consisting of a rock with Guru’s body imprint is considered the holiest. All temples are surrounded by a 108 Chorten wall and it dates back to the 17th century.

Jambay Lhakhang

Built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century, it is a part of the 108 monasteries said to be built by him bring peace and subdue evil spirits. After renovation, the architecture was changed and today it appears to date to the early 20th century.

Chankhar Lhakhang

Also known as the Iron Castle, this Lhakhang is said to be built on the remains of the palace of the Indian Sindhu King. It is very simple in design and looks like a common house. Though it is very old, it was rebuilt by Dorji Lingpa in the 14th century.

Jakar Dzong

This dzong was built in 1549 and was meant to be a monastery. It was founded by the predecessors of Shabdrung and was upgraded after he came to power in the 17th century. Today, it is the administrative seat of Bumthang and is also home to the regional monk body.

Lhodrak Kharchhu Monastery

Founded by Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche, today the monastery houses about 400 monks and is the main hub of preservation of Tibetan art and culture. It was built in 1984 and today it is one of the largest monasteries in the entire Kingdom. You can see monks learning the ancient as well the modern Tibetan religion here and is a must visit.
