Phuentsholing – The Gateway to Paradise

In a stark contrast to the peaceful landscapes of Bhutan, Phuentsholing is more of a mingling of modern life, traditions, culture and landscapes. A demographic mix of Indians, Nepalese and Bhutanese, this city is a harmonious haven that offers much more than you can see.

Phuentsholing is a very busy hub for tourists since most Indians prefer to visit Bhutan by road and this is a perfect gateway. While there are a few mandatory permits to take care of, it is relatively easy to travel through. Let us check out a few of Phuentsholing’s tourist attractions that make it worth your while to stay and enjoy the place before you move on to interior Bhutan.

Phuentsholing Bhutan Gate

As the name suggests the Bhutan Gate is the gateway to Bhutan and demarcates the Indian and Bhutanese territories. It also divides the Indian city of Jaigon and Bhutanese city of Phuentsholing. While Jaigaon is not a tasteful place to be, once you enter Phuentsholing, the people seem to be much better behaved and co-operative.

Not only people, you will also notice a sea of change in cleanliness, planning and architecture. We would suggest walking through the gate to take it in and make it a more memorable experience. A lot of hotels are available in the vicinity of the main market to stay in and mingle with locals or shop.

Zangto Pelri Lhakhang and the Zanglo Peri Park

Located within the Zanglo Peri Park, the Zangto Pelri Lhakhang houses the perfect replica of Guru Rinpoche. He is highly revered and this place is also home to eight manifestations of the guru depicted with eight life-size idols. There are some wonderful statues of Avalokiteshvara, Bodhisattvas and a few paintings of Lord Buddha that are so beautiful that they cannot be missed when you visit.

The top floor of the Zangto Pelri Lhakhang houses the beautiful statue of Amitabha. The Zangto Pelri Lhakhang is more of a temple and you will see many locals visiting the place to offer prayers. The best time to visit Zangto Pelri Lhakhang is in the morning when you can see and hear Buddhist monks praying which brings a lot of serenity and peace to a visitor.

The Kharbandi Goemba

The Karbandi Goemba or the Kharbandi Monastery was founded in 1967 and was the winter residence of Ashi Phuntsho Choedron, the royal grandmother. The entry is through a plus garden that gives a fantastic view of the Phuentsholing town and the plans of Bengal since it is allocated at a height of over 400 meters. The garden’s aesthetics are further enhanced with the eight Tibetan Buddhist stupas. The monastery itself is quite beautiful with large statues of Sakhyamuni Buddha, Shabdrung Ngawang and Guru Rinpoche.

It is believed that this monastery fulfils wishes of those who pray here. A legend does the rounds that a wish for a child was granted to an Indian couple. Since then many couples are known to visit this monastery to wish for children.

The Torsa River Side

The Torsa River flows north from Phuentsholing to Thimpu / Paro. The Torsa river side has a path to walk alongside and if you are a morning walker, there is no better place to walk. Vehicles are not allowed on the track and the walk itself is quite invigorating.

When you are here, we would recommend taking your camera along, since the river banks are quite picturesque and the birds chirping away in the background is music to ears.

The Torsa river side track ends in a basketball court. Also, there is an area where you can camp for the night and enjoy the stars where two streams of the same river meet each other.

Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre

One of the major attractions of Phuentsholing, the Amo Chhu Crocodile breeding centre houses various species of crocodiles and alligators. Seeing those at close quarters can be an exhilarating experience, of course, how close you get depends on the time of your visit. If you want to see them really up close and in action, you would better find out the feeding times and visit this place.

All in all, if you are visiting Bhutan from India, Phuentsholing provides a great insight into the country, its culture and its beauty. Before you move on, it is recommended that you spend 2/3 days here to take in the change and peace so that you can enjoy the rest of Bhutan.
